It’s so much fun seeing things come together in our bohemian cabin! Now that the exterior is finished and we are working inside we’ve moved from 2D to 3D. We can walk around in the space and see how our plans on paper are becoming our plans in real life 3D. We’ve moved and changed things once we’ve been in the actual space, something that’s costly and not easy if you have a builder build your home.

Mike is a General Contractor and knows all aspects of structure and mechanics of buildings but has never built a home from scratch. I’ve designed our flip and rental homes but have never designed from scratch (where the lights, outlets and switches go, how stairs are laid out, where doors should be and how big, placement of stone for fireplace and so much more). It’s quite a thrill and we are not only learning but 100% involved in every aspect of this build.

This farm property is hopefully going to be in our family for years to come. Every aspect is unique and has a story behind it. I plan on annotating items with history, features and dates so that the future generations can know the story of the pieces. For instance the repurposed items, the antiques from family, the kitchen hardware that was hand-forged by my uncle, Jim Bernard, art pieces in the foyer gallery, the cedar logs around from our forest, etc.

We are starting the drywall so we are closing in on the interior details now. I keep telling myself to “enjoy the process” since I’m impatient and want things to move along faster than they are. I have to realize if we want a solid built home with unique artisan features it can not be built quickly. You can’t rush art, it’s complete when it needs to be. We are blessed to be able to build our dream home!
